Notre Dame to Open '08 Season with College Football Doormat Michigan in Effort to Make Themselves Feel Big, Tough

After an embarrassing start to their '07 football season where they've been outscored 64-13 by their first two opponents, Notre Dame has announced plans to play a softer early schedule to begin 2008, including a season opening game against college football weakling Michigan.

"We don't want to come out next year and have a repeat of what we're going through now," Irish coach Charlie Weis said. "We're really struggling right now and the only way to take the focus off our humiliating defeats is to play someone suffering even more humiliating defeats- that's Michigan. Michigan will cure what ails us."

Wolverines coach Lloyd Carr thinks with a few breaks, and a little luck, his team can stay in the game for at least a half and compete with an Irish team that has defeated the Naval Academy each of the last 97 years plus has backed into a lucrative BCS bowl each of the past two years.

"It's tough at a school like Michigan to schedule the bigger programs and even more difficult to get them to come play at your place," Carr said. "But I'll do whatever it takes to build this program, we'll go anywhere and play anyone. We're not afraid of powerhouses- bring on the Eastern Michigans, the Temples or the Youngstown States of the world- nobody's too tough for us. I'll even schedule non-scholarship Pioneer League teams if I think it'll make my team better. You don't scare me Dayton Flyers!"

Weis says the move to schedule Michigan in the opener was necessary because, at this point, Notre Dame's losses have not been as deflating as Michigan's.

"Our losses are at least coming against teams within the continental United States," Weis said.
