For nearly 25 years Molly Hampton had avoided watching baseball, but when she began dating her current boyfriend she found herself being forced to watch America's pastime on a regular basis and was therefore exposed to more of the game’s unwritten rituals.
"That's when I noticed all these losers at an Atlanta game with their hats turned inside out and upside down," Hampton said. "I asked my boyfriend what they were doing and he nonchalantly says they're 'putting on their rally caps.' What the hell does that mean?!"
Hampton was so thrown off by the very existence of "rally caps" that she was unable to go about her day-to-day life. She suffered frequent headaches and had to take a leave of absence from her job due to an inability to concentrate on anything else. Also, the sound of Pete Van Wieren's voice causes her to seize.
Despite all she has been through, Hampton is not willing to submit to baseball tradition and still remains skeptical of the "rally cap" and suspicious of baseball is general.
"My boyfriend says it's something people do at every baseball stadium, but I refuse to believe it. It's just too stupid," she said. "Next he's probably going to tell me that I can't reproduce or retransmit the games he watches in any form or that the accounts and descriptions of those games may not be disseminated without the express written consent of Major League Baseball. Yeah, right."
